چکیده

The Bath University Matching Pursuit (BUMP) project aims at developing new matching pursuit (MP) algorithms for still image and video compression. Compared to traditional MP coding, BUMP has many new features that have been designed with the aim of producing an efficient MP representation with reduced complexity. In this paper, we study in depth the characteristics the of bit rate change along the coding process of BUMP coder, and then propose a mathematical framework for describing the relationship between the number of coded atoms and the resultant bit rate. The framework has a very simple form and demonstrates very high modeling accuracy, which allows a precise estimation of the number of bits to be used throughout the coding process. We then present an adaptive algorithm for predicting the number of bits for use in our hybrid wavelet/MP video coder. Experiments show that the proposed rate estimation scheme is able to provide an extremely accurate estimation for the BUMP based video coder.

Dictionaries for matching pursuits video coding

Matching pursuits is a dictionary-based coding method, which has recently been demonstrated to outperform standard techniques, such as H.263, at low bit rate video compression. Unfortunately, the method involves an extremely high computational cost, compared to the DCT-based H.263. The contribution of this paper relies on reporting three new dictionaries for matching pursuits video coding, whos...

Matching pursuits video coding: Dictionaries and fast implementation

Matching pursuits over a basis of separable Gabor functions has been demonstrated to outperform DCT methods for displaced frame difference coding for video compression. Unfortunately, apart from very low bit-rate applications, the algorithm involves an extremely high computational load. This paper contains original contribution to the issues of dictionary selection and fast implementation for m...

Matching pursuits video coding using generalized bit-planes

The Matching Pursuits (MP) coding method has been employed successfully in video coding. In it, the motion compensated frame difference is decomposed on an overcomplete dictionary of atoms, generating a sequence of pairs specifying the atoms used and their corresponding coefficients. A particular rate distortion trade-off is achieved by setting both the number of atoms and the quantizers of the...

Very low bit rate video coding using matching pursuits

The term matching pursuits refers to a greedy algorithm which matches signal structures to a large, diverse dictionary of functions. The technique was proposed by Mallat and Zhang 1 with an application to signal analysis. In this paper, we show how matching pursuits can be used to e ectively code the motion residual in a hybrid video coding system at bit rates below 20 kbit/s. One advantage of ...

Matching pursuits multiple description coding for wireless video

Multiple description coding (MDC) is an error resilient source coding scheme that creates multiple bitstreams of approximately equal importance. The reconstructed signal based on any single bitstream has an acceptable quality. However, a higher quality reconstruction can be achieved with larger number of bitstreams. We develop a multiple (2) description video coding scheme based on the 3 loop s...
